Teachers celebrate birthday, recognize guide as former student

Two high school teachers took advantage of their summer break to celebrate a birthday adventure-style with The Rivermen. Dave Senften and Allison Parker celebrated Dave’s 34th birthday on a TreeTops canopy tour yesterday and a whitewater rafting trip today. Despite the rainy weather, the Lancaster, Ohio residents enjoyed zipping through the trees, walking on sky bridges and enjoying the scenery. Dave and Allison have been on the canopy tour at Hocking Hills a time or two near where they live, but said the experience yesterday with TreeTops was a little different – nicer scenery and longer zips. Before they headed out today to raft the rapids of the lower New River, Allison asked a guide what the letters “T L” stood for over the door that guides kept walking in and out of. Guide Wes Moquin turned to answer her question, “Trip Leader” and recognized the Lancaster High teacher as his algebra II teacher from high school. “I taught Wes probably four years ago,” Allison said. “He ended up being our guide!” Dave had been rafting once before with the Rivermen close to two decades ago when he was a boy scout. “There was no question as to who I wanted to take us down the river,” Dave said. “Even though it was so long ago, I knew I wanted to go with Rivermen.” Allison had never been rafting until today but is already looking forward to coming back, maybe even as early as Gauley season. “I want to take my 10-year-old son, Jacob,” she said. “He would love this.” “This was a great ‘last hoorah!’ before school starts back up,” Dave said. “Such a cool way to celebrate my birthday.”
